{"id":10737,"date":"2025-05-02T17:36:37","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T17:36:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artsmidwest.org\/?p=10737"},"modified":"2025-05-02T19:37:50","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T19:37:50","slug":"barter-theatre-shakespeare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artsmidwest.org\/stories\/barter-theatre-shakespeare\/","title":{"rendered":"Shakespeare for All in Rural Appalachia, Rooted in Soil and Soul"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After almost a hundred years running, <a href=\"https:\/\/bartertheatre.com\/\">Barter Theatre<\/a> is still a hub of creative exchange in Appalachia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded during the Great Depression, they got their name from their policy of allowing theatregoers to \u201cbuy\u201d admission with fresh produce, livestock, or dairy\u2014in its early days, 4 out of 5 patrons traded their way to a ticket, valued then at 35 cents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though times have changed, the theatre hasn\u2019t\u2014everything Barter does continues to be rooted in community, and their philosophy that theatre is for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It remains the beating heart of Abingdon, a rural town in Southwest Virginia. It\u2019s one of the country\u2019s oldest professional resident repertory theaters\u2014meaning their plays throughout the season are performed by has their own full-time, paid theatre troupe based theatre across the country in 2020, Barter worked with the local Moonlite Drive-In to stage socially-distanced plays streamed live-to-screen so people could still enjoy performances.\n href=\"https:\/\/artsmidwest.org\/programs\/shakespeare-in-american-communities\/\">Shakespeare in American Communities<\/a>, is a perfect example\u2014while their performances are open to all, Barter has long-standing connections with the region\u2019s schools to bring in hundreds of students to performances every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause of this partnership, almost every kid who\u2019s grown up here has seen Shakespeare,\u201d says Producing Artistic Director Katy Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every show opens with a lightning round-style summary of the show with the cast explaining major plot points and characters, without spoiling the final act. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What started as a teaching aid for their student matinees eventually became so widely requested by their adult audiences that it\u2019s now baked into all of their Shakespeare performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think there&#8217;s some sort of idea that [Shakespeare is] broccoli, and that&#8217;s never the experience that people have,\u201d says Brown. \u201cHe wrote for everybody, and our goal from the beginning has been to make sure people know that Shakespeare is theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div in talkbacks after every show with the director and cast members, which further brings the text to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had grown-ups speak to me and say, \u2018I thought that I was too dumb for Shakespeare, but I understood absolutely every word,\u2019\u201d says Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what makes Barter special is that the place is just as important as the people\u2014as a company, they\u2019re successful not <em>despite<\/em> being in small-town Appalachia, but rather <em>because<\/em> of their unique rural setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They not only keep Abingdon alive and thriving in terms of tourism\u2014bringing in over 120,000 visitors a year to a town with a population of around 8,500\u2014but also provide an incredibly rare opportunity for their performers and creative team to make a real living out of their work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Barter presenting around 20 shows per season, their company is kept plenty busy; during their peak in the summer, they have as many as five shows running at a time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou might be in Shakespeare while you&#8217;re rehearsing the musical, while you&#8217;re rehearsing a new work,\u201d says Brown. \u201cSo many times when you work in theater, you move and move and move, and you don&#8217;t get to put down roots\u2014but our artists get to have a life, a home, and a family here, and really get to know the people that we\u2019re serving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Shakespeare in American Communities is a theater program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
