Pierre, South Dakota. Akron, Ohio. Greenwood, Indiana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These three, along with 15 other Midwestern communities, made 2025\u2019s top 100 arts-vibrant areas across the U.S.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its tenth study, SMU DataArts<\/a> released its Arts Vibrancy Index<\/a>\u2014a measure of \u201csupply, demand, and public support for arts and culture at the community level.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adjusted for cost of living and population, researchers analyzed arts providers, government support, and arts dollars<\/a> in communities in all 50 states.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minnesota\u2019s Minneapolis\/St. Paul\/Bloomington region ranked #18 out of 100, the \u201cmost vibrant\u201d arts-wise in the Midwest. That\u2019s followed by Chicago\/Naperville\/Schaumburg, Illinois, and Kalamazoo\/Portage, Michigan, at #26 and #31, respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n

We talked with arts leaders in a couple of these top communities, including Galesburg, Illinois, and Spearfish, South Dakota. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have this deep-rooted history of supporting the arts,\u201d says Tuesday \u00c7etin, executive director of the Galesburg Community Arts Center in Illinois. \u201cArts have been just part of the fabric of Galesburg for generations.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Arts Center has been around for over 100 years, old enough to witness Galesburg\u2019s longstanding railroad industry. The city\u2019s Amtrak train station connects to Chicago, bringing students and artists to and from Galesburg cyclically, \u00c7etin says. The city is also home to Blick Art Materials and late artists Carl Sandburg<\/a> and Dorothea Tanning<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n

Galesburg boasts\u00a0historic venues like\u00a0its\u00a0<\/span>symphony<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>civic theatre<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>performing arts theatre<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>Jazz music<\/span><\/a>\u00a0often rings out; poetry keeps pens moving; folks come out to see new visual art works.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe arts thrive here in our area,\u201d \u00c7etin says. \u201c<\/span>It is something\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0deeply invested in by individuals and community members. And I think for a smaller Rust Belt community,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0the fabric that has kept a very consistent economy going.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Across Iowa and far west into South Dakota is Spearfish, South Dakota\u2014a fellow art-loving\u00a0city\u00a0less than half the population size of Galesburg.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Award-winning artist<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Anna Robins is a filmmaker, composer, and arts advocate\u00a0in\u00a0Spearfish.\u00a0She nods\u00a0to Spearfish\u2019s enormous\u00a0<\/span>arts and music festival<\/span><\/a>\u00a0each year,\u00a0a r<\/span>obust music scene<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Termesphere\u2019 artist<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>opera house<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith a lot of small towns around us, the interesting thing about this\u00a0area is\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0so much crossover between town,\u201d\u00a0Robins says, noting the \u201ccrossover\u201d extends to cultures, landscapes, and people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSpearfish has a vibrant art scene because there\u2019s all these other small towns around us that come here to gather and to express and to display.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Midwest Numbers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Arts Vibrancy Index defines communities based on the U.S. Census Bureau\u2019s CBSAs (Core Based Statistical Areas). Those are \u201ccore urban areas\u201d and adjacent counties \u201cwith strong economic and social ties.\u201d The top Midwest areas on the list are: <\/p>\n\n\n
