On stage, JAS Quintet is performing. The students, grades 3 through 7, scream so loud after each solo that you\u2019d think they were at a Taylor Swift concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t your typical day in Grafton, a town of 4,000. Jazz doesn\u2019t exactly fill the airwaves here. Members of this five-piece group have been playing in rural towns across South Dakota for over a decade thanks to local touring grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their mission? Introduce jazz to the next generation\u2014kids who might never hear it otherwise. They estimate that they\u2019ve performed for over 65,000 students over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI try to share what we&#8217;re doing, letting audiences know that what they\u2019re hearing is unique and we&#8217;ll never play it again,\u201d says band co-founder Joel Shotwell, speaking about improvisation and jazz. \u201cI like to go into how this music evolved, and how American it really is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JAS Quintet includes Shotwell on saxophone, along with Jeffrey Paul (keys), Andrew Reinartz (bass), Daniel Heier (drums), and Jim Speirs (trumpet).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, they create a sound that blends original jazz pieces with timeless classics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"JAS Quintet - Bird Ritual Interrupted - Side A Puppets\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/spnR5GpE3e0?start=152&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-tour-fueled-by-music-and-a-grant\">A Tour Fueled by Music (and a Grant)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>JAS Quintet\u2019s latest tour, made possible by a<a href=\"https:\/\/artsmidwest.org\/get-support\/jazz-road\/\"> Jazz Road<\/a> grant from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southarts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Arts<\/a> in partnership with Arts Midwest, took them through North Dakota for the first time. And at each stop, they reached new audiences of jazz listeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over in Bismarck, they held workshops to coach high school musicians, helping them hone their craft. It\u2019s been going strong for almost nine years now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Audience members of all ages can experience \u201csitting in\u201d \u2013 a jazz term for improvising alongside a band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely something I wish I had when I was coming up on the scene,\u201d says Shotwell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For JAS Quintet, it\u2019s not just about playing music. It\u2019s also about getting people\u2014especially young people\u2014excited about jazz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe biggest challenge is just convincing people that this music is worth their time,\u201d he explains. \u201cIf people can get their eyes open to what jazz is, maybe they\u2019ll be compelled to go listen
